In 1606, when Gian Lorenzo Bernini was 8 years old, Pope Paul prophetically remarked that ‘This child will be the Michelangelo of his age’. This child prodigy would become the symbol of the Baroque style of art and architecture. Like Michelangelo, he was not only a brilliant sculptor, but also a gifted architect, who changed the face of Rome. He lived into his 80’s and served under seven popes. Bernini’s biographer said ‘In Bernini’s hands, marble could become as impressionable as wax and as soft as dough’. That was Bernini’s magic. Jim Caldwell, an artist, architect, teacher, and art historian, has delivered 130 art talks about many of his favorite artists, including Monet, Sargent, Van Gogh and Vermeer.
